ActionScript

Object-Oriented Language

ActionScript is an object-oriented programming language that was originally developed by Macromedia Inc., which was later acquired by Adobe Systems. The Programming Language Database dates its creation to 1998 and credits Gary Grossman as its creator. It is described as a derivation of HyperTalk, the scripting language of HyperCard, so its roots lie in the scripting tools of that earlier hypermedia system. The same database lists JavaScript, Java, Haxe, XML and MXML among its related languages, and it records more than twenty four thousand public ActionScript repositories on GitHub, which shows how widely the language was used. Several other languages and tools, among them Haxe, JFlex and MonkeyX, refer to ActionScript in their own entries.
