Home Assistant is a free and open source home automation platform that acts as a central hub connecting smart home devices from many different manufacturers. Developer Paulus Schoutsen created it in September 2013 as a Python application and released it publicly on GitHub that November. The platform emphasizes local control rather than dependence on cloud services, letting it run independently of any one vendor's ecosystem. It is released under the Apache License 2.0, runs on Linux based systems such as Raspberry Pi and Intel NUC hardware, and uses Python on the backend with a TypeScript based web interface. FAQs
What is the difference between Home Assistant Operating System and Home Assistant Container?
Operating System is the all-in-one recommended install; Container runs in Docker on a system you maintain yourself.
Home Assistant offers two installation methods. Home Assistant Operating System is an embedded, minimalistic operating system designed to run Home Assistant on single board computers such as the Raspberry Pi, or on virtual machines. It includes Home Assistant Core and the Home Assistant Supervisor, supports apps, and keeps itself up to date, and the project recommends it for most users. Home Assistant Container is a standalone container-based installation that runs on a Linux system you provide, with the documentation focused on Docker. It does not support apps, and you are responsible for updates and for the host operating system.
