Donald Shell

Theory of Computation

Donald L. Shell was an American computer scientist, born in 1924 and died in 2015, who designed the Shellsort sorting algorithm. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Cincinnati in 1959 and published the Shellsort algorithm in the Communications of the ACM in July of that same year. The method, which compares elements that lie far apart before steadily shrinking the gap between them, carries his name and became a standard teaching example of an in-place sorting algorithm.
