Algorithms that turn a name or word into a code based on its sound, so that spellings that are pronounced alike receive the same code. Soundex, patented in the early twentieth century, keeps the first letter and encodes the following consonants as digits, and Metaphone improves on it with rules for English pronunciation. They are used to find a person in a record system when the spelling of a surname varies.
