The Z curve is a three-dimensional curve that gives a unique geometric representation of a DNA sequence, built from mathematical formulas based on the frequencies of the four nucleotide bases, adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine, along the sequence. Turning a DNA sequence into a curve in this way lets researchers apply visual and numerical analysis to the sequence, and the method has been used for tasks such as gene prediction and locating the origin of replication in a genome. It should not be confused with the unrelated Z-order space filling curve used elsewhere in computer science for spatial indexing.
