Titan, also known as OLCF-3, was a supercomputer built by Cray at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for use in a variety of science projects. It was an upgrade of the previous Oak Ridge supercomputer Jaguar, using graphics processing units alongside conventional central processing units, and was the first such hybrid system to perform over 10 petaFLOPS. The upgrade began in October 2011 and became available to researchers in early 2013, at an initial cost of 60 million dollars funded primarily by the United States Department of Energy.
Facts
SignificanceIt was the first hybrid CPU-GPU supercomputer to perform over 10 petaFLOPS. 1 FAQs
How did Titan compare with the Jaguar supercomputer it replaced?
Ten times the speed and five times the energy efficiency of Jaguar.
According to Oak Ridge, combining central processing units with graphics processing units allowed Titan to achieve 10 times the speed and 5 times the energy efficiency of its predecessor, the Jaguar supercomputer. It did so while using only modestly more energy and occupying the same physical footprint.
