HTTP

Network and Internet Systems

HTTP, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, is the application-layer protocol that carries requests and responses between web browsers and servers, and is the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web. Tim Berners-Lee designed the original protocol at CERN alongside HTML and the URL scheme, with an early version documented in 1991 as part of the Web's founding toolkit. Later revisions, including HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, added persistent connections, multiplexing and other performance improvements while keeping the same request-response model at its core. FAQs

Which port does secure HTTP use by default?

Port 443 by default.

Web addresses that begin with https use HTTP carried over TLS, which encrypts the connection. When such an address gives no port number, the standard says TCP port 443, the reserved port for HTTP over TLS, is the default.
