Rudolf Bayer is a German computer scientist and professor emeritus of informatics at the Technical University of Munich, where he has been employed since 1972. He is noted for inventing three data structures used for sorting and indexing: the B-tree, developed with Edward M. McCreight, the UB-tree, developed with Volker Markl, and the red-black tree. He received the 2001 ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award and was elected a fellow of the Gesellschaft fur Informatik in 2005.
