Also Known As Gary Arlen Kildall
Software And Its Engineering

Gary Arlen Kildall was an American computer scientist and microcomputer entrepreneur considered a pioneer of the personal computer revolution. During the 1970s he created the CP/M operating system among other operating systems and programming tools, and founded Digital Research, Inc. to market and sell his software; in 1974, in Pacific Grove, California, he demonstrated the first working prototype of CP/M, which later became the dominant operating system for microcomputers, and his invention of the BIOS allowed a microprocessor based computer to communicate with disk storage. During the 1980s he also co-hosted the PBS program Computer Chronicles, discussing developments in personal computing.

FAQs

Why did IBM not use Gary Kildall's CP/M for the first IBM PC?

One account says IBM could not get Digital Research to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which killed the deal.

The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing records one account. CP/M was very popular in the late 1970s, and Bill Gates suggested using it as the operating system for the IBM PC. IBM wanted to own and control the operating system completely but could not get Digital Research, Kildall's company, to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which killed the deal. After the IBM PC was released in 1981, CP/M was virtually wiped out by MS-DOS, whose file system was patterned closely on CP/M's.
