HMAC is a specific type of message authentication code that combines a cryptographic hash function with a secret cryptographic key. Like any message authentication code, it can be used to verify both the integrity and the authenticity of a message at once, and as a keyed hash function it can also serve inside a key derivation scheme or a key stretching scheme.
