LZ77 is a lossless data-compression algorithm published by Abraham Lempel and Jacob Ziv in 1977, also known as Lempel-Ziv 1. It is a dictionary coder that maintains a sliding window of previously seen characters during compression, encoding new data as references back into that window, and because decompression proceeds from a sliding window over previously decoded characters it must always start at the beginning of the input. LZ77 forms the basis of numerous later compression schemes, including LZSS and LZMA, and the DEFLATE algorithm used in the PNG and ZIP formats builds on it directly; LZ77 and its sibling LZ78 were named an IEEE Milestone in 2004, and Jacob Ziv received the 2021 IEEE Medal of Honor for his role in their development.
