Meet-in-the-Middle Attack

The meet-in-the-middle attack is a known-plaintext, generic space-time tradeoff cryptographic attack against encryption schemes that rely on performing multiple encryption operations in sequence. It is the primary reason Double DES is not used, since a Triple DES key can be brute-forced by an attacker willing to spend enough memory and time using the technique.
