The Common Development and Distribution License is a free and open-source software license produced by Sun Microsystems and based on the Mozilla Public License. Files licensed under the CDDL can be combined with files licensed under other licenses, whether open source or proprietary. It is a weak copyleft license between the GPL and the BSD and MIT permissive licenses, requiring only the source code files under the CDDL to remain under it. It was submitted to the Open Source Initiative for approval on 1 December 2004 and approved in mid January 2005, and the Free Software Foundation considers it a free software license but one that is incompatible with the GNU General Public License.
