Eclipse Public License version 2.0, with the SPDX code EPL-2.0, was announced on 24 August 2017 after discussion of a new version began in May 2013. In terms of compatibility with the GNU General Public License, the new license allows the initial contributor to a new project to opt in to a secondary license that provides explicit compatibility with version 2.0 of the GPL or any later version; if that optional designation is absent, the Eclipse license remains source incompatible with the GPL of any version. The Eclipse Foundation advises that projects using version 1.0 should migrate to version 2.0, and relicensing is a straightforward matter that does not require the consent of all contributors.
