LabVIEW is a graphical system design and development platform created by National Instruments, first released as version 1.0 for the Apple Macintosh in October 1986 and later extended to Windows, macOS and Linux. Its underlying language, generally called G, is a visual, dataflow based programming language in which a program is built by wiring together graphical nodes rather than writing text, and a node runs as soon as all of the data it needs is available, which lets multiple nodes execute at the same time without the programmer writing explicit multithreaded code. LabVIEW is widely used for data acquisition, instrument control and industrial automation, letting engineers who are not primarily programmers design and run complex test and measurement systems, supported by a large ecosystem of device drivers and third party libraries that has made it a standard tool in laboratory and industrial test and measurement settings.
