Apache Groovy is a Java-syntax-compatible, object-oriented programming language for the Java platform that functions as both a general programming language and a scripting language, compiling to JVM bytecode and interoperating directly with Java code and libraries. It was designed by James Strachan, who first discussed its development in August 2003, with version 1.0 released on January 2, 2007. Groovy is multi-paradigm, supporting object-oriented, imperative, functional, aspect-oriented and scripting styles, with dynamic, static, strong and duck typing all available, and it supports closures, multiline strings, string-embedded expressions, abstract syntax tree transformations and traits. It is notably used in build automation tools such as Gradle, the Grails web framework and Jenkins Pipeline for continuous integration, and is released under the Apache License 2.0.
