Kotlin is a statically typed, multi-paradigm programming language developed by JetBrains, first announced in 2011 and reaching a stable 1.0 release in 2016. Designed for full interoperability with Java, Kotlin runs primarily on the Java Virtual Machine and also compiles to JavaScript and native code; Google announced Kotlin as an officially supported language for Android development in 2017. The language takes its name from Kotlin Island, near Saint Petersburg, echoing Java's own naming after the Indonesian island.
