Database Management System

MongoDB is a source-available, cross-platform, document-oriented database program classified as a NoSQL database product that uses JSON-like documents with optional schemas. It was released in February 2009 by 10gen and supports features like sharding, replication, and ACID transactions. Its managed cloud service, MongoDB Atlas, operates on AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure, and current versions are licensed under the Server Side Public License (SSPL).

FAQs

Is MongoDB open source?

No. Current MongoDB is source-available under the SSPL, which the Open Source Initiative does not accept as open source.

Not by the Open Source Initiative definition. Early MongoDB was free and open source under the AGPL license, but on November 8, 2018, with release 4.0.4, the license changed to the Server Side Public License (SSPL). The Open Source Initiative stated in January 2021 that the SSPL is not an open source license, which is why the project describes itself as source-available. The language drivers remain under the Apache License.
