Generative art is a post-conceptual practice in which the artwork is created, in whole or in part, through an autonomous system that the artist sets in motion rather than directly controlling every resulting detail. The autonomous system need not be a computer: artists have built generative works from chemical, biological, mechanical, robotic and smart-material processes as well as randomization, mathematics, data mapping, symmetry and tiling rules, alongside the more familiar algorithmic and computer-generated forms. In many cases the artist frames the system itself as an expression of their intent, while in others the system is treated as an independent creative agent whose rule-based or stochastic logic produces outputs that are dynamic and can adapt to context rather than being fixed in advance.
