Strong typing is the colloquial name for a language that discourages or prevents type errors. The cited article, titled Type safety because the title Strongly typed redirects to it, defines type safety as the extent to which a programming language discourages or prevents type errors, such as trying to add a string to an integer, and says type-safe languages are sometimes also called strongly or strictly typed. Its section on strong and weak typing says programming languages are often colloquially classified as strongly or weakly typed to refer to certain aspects of type safety, and it quotes the 1974 definition by Liskov and Zilles of a strongly typed language as one in which, whenever an object is passed to a called function, its type must be compatible with the type declared there. Languages the atlas records as strongly typed are grouped under this entry.
