Taher Elgamal is an Egyptian-American cryptographer and tech executive recognized for proposing the ElGamal cryptosystem in his 1985 paper on discrete logarithms. His work developing Secure Sockets Layer at Netscape, where he served as chief scientist from 1995 to 1998, became foundational for Transport Layer Security and HTTPS, and he received the 2019 Marconi Prize, shared with Paul Kocher, and election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2022.
