The ElGamal encryption algorithm is a public key encryption system based on the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, described by Taher Elgamal in 1985. It is used in the free GNU Privacy Guard software, in recent versions of PGP, and in other cryptosystems. The related Digital Signature Algorithm is a variant of the separate ElGamal signature scheme, which should not be confused with ElGamal encryption itself.
