Key-Value Database System

A key-value database system stores and retrieves data as simple associative pairs, each mapping a unique key to a value the store treats as an opaque unit rather than parsing its internal structure. Lookups, insertions and deletions typically run in close to constant time because the engine does not need to maintain relationships between records or interpret each value's contents, which lets a key-value store handle very high throughput with a comparatively simple internal design. This trade-off suits caching layers, session storage and other workloads that need fast, predictable single-record access, at the cost of the richer querying, joins and secondary indexing that a relational or document-oriented system offers instead.
