Time Series Database System

A time series database system is built to store and query data points indexed in chronological order, such as sensor readings, financial ticks or infrastructure metrics, rather than the more loosely ordered records a general purpose database handles. Because such data arrives at high, steady rates and is read back mostly as ranges over time, these systems use compression schemes and storage layouts tuned for sequential, timestamp ordered writes and for rollup queries such as averages or maximums over a window, rather than for the arbitrary relational joins a conventional database optimizes for instead. Time series systems trace back to industrial data historians recording measurements from physical sensors and have since broadened into application monitoring, internet of things telemetry and financial analytics.
