C# is a general-purpose, multi-paradigm programming language developed by Microsoft, first widely distributed in July 2000, encompassing structured, imperative, object-oriented, event-driven, task-driven, functional, generic, reflective and concurrent styles.

Significance

Became an international standard (Ecma ECMA-334 in 2002; ISO/IEC 23270 in 2003) and the flagship language of Microsoft's .NET platform. Hejlsberg said in July 2000 that C# is not a Java clone and is much closer to C++ in its design. 1
