CSS, short for Cascading Style Sheets, is a style sheet language used to describe how a document written in a markup language is presented. It is most often used to set the visual style of web pages and user interfaces written in HTML and XHTML, but it can be applied to any XML document, including plain XML, SVG and XUL, and it is also applicable to rendering in speech or on other media. The Programming Language Database dates it to 1996 and credits Håkon Wium Lie as its creator, with early development at CERN. Together with HTML and JavaScript it is a cornerstone technology of most websites, web applications and many mobile application interfaces.
