Ladder logic

Procedural Language

Ladder logic began as a written method for documenting the design and construction of relay racks used in manufacturing and process control. Each device in a relay rack is represented by a symbol on a ladder diagram, with the connections between those devices drawn between them. Other items outside the rack, such as pumps and heaters, are also shown on the diagram. The Programming Language Database treats it as a programming language, dates it to 1994, and names the International Electrotechnical Commission as the place of its early development. It lists the Sequential Function Chart language, BASIC and C among its related languages, and its example shows a diagram in which a block adds A and B and places the result in C.
