Programming Language

Elixir

Functional Language

Elixir is a functional, concurrent, high-level general-purpose programming language that runs on the BEAM virtual machine, the same platform that implements the Erlang programming language. It was designed by Jose Valim as a research project at Plataformatec, with its first release on May 25, 2012. Elixir is multi-paradigm, combining functional, concurrent, distributed and process-oriented styles, with dynamic, strong and, from version 1.20, gradual typing. It targets large-scale applications in telecommunications, e-commerce and finance that must handle high concurrency, low latency and large volumes of data, and is released under the Apache License 2.0. What does Elixir get from Erlang?

Elixir runs on the Erlang VM and inherits its strengths in distributed systems.

Elixir runs on the Erlang virtual machine. Its official site says that thanks to the Erlang VM, Elixir also excels at IoT, distributed systems, and everything Erlang is renowned for.
Connections

Associated With

Gleam, Elixir and Erlang share the BEAM runtime and interoperate.

Base Language For

Phoenix, Frameworks

Verified en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_(web_framework): "Phoenix is a web development framework written in the functional programming language Elixir."

Built On

Direction correction: Elixir compiles to and runs on the Erlang VM (BEAM) and reuses Erlang libraries, not the reverse.
