MUMPS

Procedural Language

MUMPS (Massachusetts General Hospital Utility Multi-Programming System), also known as M, is a programming language and integrated database system developed beginning in 1966 by Neil Pappalardo and colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital, designed originally for hospital laboratory and clinical information systems. MUMPS combines a procedural programming language directly with a hierarchical, sparse-array database as a built-in language feature rather than a separate system, an unusual design well suited to medical records applications; it remains in wide production use today, including the US Department of Veterans Affairs' VistA system and Epic Systems' electronic health record platform.
