Pharo is a cross platform, open source implementation of the classic Smalltalk-80 programming language and its runtime environment, created in March 2008 by Stephane Ducasse and Marcus Denker as a fork of Squeak version 3.9, which itself descended from the original Smalltalk-80 built by Dan Ingalls and Alan Kay. It is a pure object oriented, dynamically typed, reflective language and environment, running on the OpenSmalltalk virtual machine known as Cog, and rather than simply reproducing existing Smalltalk dialects, the Pharo project set out to revisit and enhance Smalltalk's design for contemporary software engineering practice. It supports live programming features such as manipulating and updating running objects immediately and just in time compilation, and it is released as free and open source software under a mix of MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses. Its name comes from the French word phare, meaning lighthouse, which is also the source of the project's lighthouse logo.
