Natural is a fourth-generation programming language and application development environment created by Software AG, first released in 1979, designed to work closely with Software AG's own ADABAS database management system for building business applications on IBM mainframes and, later, on distributed and open systems platforms. Natural emphasizes rapid application development through a higher-level, English-like procedural syntax than earlier third-generation languages such as COBOL, and later versions added object-oriented programming and modern user-interface development capabilities while retaining backward compatibility with decades of existing Natural code.
