COMAL

Structured Language

COMAL, short for Common Algorithmic Language, is a structured programming language combining elements of BASIC and Pascal, created by the Danish developers Borge R. Christensen and Benedikt Lofstedt, with a proof of concept running on August 5, 1974 and the first commercial release following in February 1975. Christensen, a mathematics teacher, designed COMAL after finding that unstructured BASIC led students to write code that was hard to read, and he wanted a language that kept BASIC's interactive, easy to use environment while adding well defined subroutines and multi line control structures. COMAL ran on minicomputers before spreading to microcomputers including Commodore machines, the BBC Micro, the Apple II and IBM PCs, and it became particularly popular in schools across Scandinavia, the United Kingdom and Ireland, with some UK schools still teaching it as late as 2016.
