The SAS language is a procedural, data-oriented programming language developed by the SAS Institute beginning in the early 1970s, originally created at North Carolina State University by Anthony Barr and James Goodnight for statistical analysis of agricultural research data. The SAS language centers on the DATA step, for reading, transforming and manipulating tabular data record by record, paired with a library of PROC (procedure) statements that perform statistical, reporting and data-management operations, and it remains widely used in the pharmaceutical, financial and government sectors for regulated statistical analysis and reporting.
