Newsqueak

Concurrent Language

Newsqueak is a concurrent programming language designed by Rob Pike at Bell Labs in the early 1980s for writing application software with interactive graphical user interfaces. Its syntax follows C conventions, while its concurrency model draws on C. A. R. Hoare's communicating sequential processes, treating channels as first-class objects that can be created and passed around dynamically alongside processes. Newsqueak grew out of an earlier, unrelated Bell Labs language also called Squeak, aimed at the same problem of programs that must react to multiple input devices such as keyboards and mice. It was run through the squint interpreter, with a Unix port distributed as free and open-source software, and its ideas about channels and concurrency went on to directly influence Alef, Limbo, Go, Odin and Rust.
