Self is a high-level object-oriented programming language based on the concept of prototypes rather than classes. Self began as a variant of the language Smalltalk, adding prototype-based execution, and was developed at Xerox PARC in the mid-1980s and later at Stanford University and Sun Microsystems. Self's development environment pioneered numerous techniques including just-in-time compilation and polymorphic inline caching, which have since become standard implementation techniques for the Java virtual machine and other dynamic language runtimes.
