Azure Sphere is an application platform Microsoft built for internet connected devices, combining a custom certified chip, a Linux based operating system and cloud based device management, and it reached general availability on February 24, 2020. Its operating system is a custom Linux kernel built for Azure Sphere certified microcontroller chips, described by Microsoft as the first operating system running a Linux kernel that it has publicly released. The Azure Sphere Security Service handles device authentication, checks system integrity and delivers secure updates, and the platform's Microsoft Pluton hardware security subsystem provides cryptographic protection and tamper resistance. Chips certified for it initially came from MediaTek, with NXP and Qualcomm chips planned, and it supports both new, greenfield devices and existing, brownfield devices connected through guardian modules.
