Embedded and Real-Time Operating Systems

This group gathers operating systems designed to run inside a dedicated device rather than a general-purpose computer, guaranteeing predictable timing or running with a minimal footprint, including the major commercial real-time systems VxWorks, QNX and FreeRTOS, the open-source Contiki, eCos, ChibiOS/RT, Apache Mynewt and BeRTOS, Google device-focused Fuchsia and Android Things, Microsoft Azure Sphere, networking and appliance systems such as Cisco IOS and KasperskyOS, console and camera firmware such as the Wii system software and DigitaOS, and earlier real-time systems including VAXELN, ChorusOS, the Intel-originated ISIS, and the historical UNOS and Helios parallel systems. Their shared identity is running a single dedicated device rather than serving as a general desktop or server platform, as distinct from a full mobile handset operating system, which belongs to Mobile and Handheld Operating Systems.
