Wii system software

The Wii system software is the software frontend of the Wii, a home video game console made by Nintendo, updatable over the internet or from a game disc so Nintendo could add features and channels and patch security vulnerabilities. When a new update became available Nintendo sent a message to the Wii Message Board of internet connected consoles, and most game discs also carried system software updates so that consoles never connected to the internet could still receive them, with the system menu refusing to start a game whose required update had not been installed. Some games, such as the online titles Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, shipped with extra updates of their own, including the ability to receive Wii Message Board posts from game specific addresses, so a console needed that update installed before it could play the game for the first time.
