Project Monterey

Project Monterey was an industry attempt to build a single Unix operating system that would run across a variety of 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms while also supporting multiprocessing, at a time when compatibility between Unix platforms was limited. Its main focus was creating an enterprise-class Unix for the upcoming IA-64 architecture, then expected to dominate the server market, but the rise of Linux and the failure of the IA-64 program led its supporters to abandon the project.
