SunOS was a Unix branded operating system that Sun Microsystems built for its own workstations and servers, released from 1982 into the mid-1990s. Its early versions, 1.0 through 4.1.4, were based on the Berkeley Software Distribution and brought BSD networking innovations such as NFS and RPC into wide use; the name SunOS is usually reserved for these BSD based releases. Starting in 1991 Sun rebranded the product line as Solaris, and from version 5.0 onward the underlying system moved to the UNIX System V Release 4 architecture while keeping backward compatibility for existing SunOS software. The last SunOS branded release, 4.1.4, shipped in November 1994, with support continuing until September 2003, and the system ran across Sun's changing hardware, from Motorola 68000 series machines and the Sun386i to later SPARC systems.
