Domain/OS was a discontinued operating system for Apollo/Domain workstations, originally released as AEGIS in 1981 by Apollo Computer and rebranded Domain/OS in 1988 once Unix compatible environments were folded in. Hewlett-Packard acquired Apollo, supported the product briefly, then discontinued it in favor of HP-UX, with final support ending January 1, 2001 after the last version, 10.4.1.2, shipped in March 1992. It ran only on Apollo/Domain workstations, which required a network card even to run standalone, reflecting its identity as one of the earliest genuinely distributed operating systems. It combined ideas from Multics, System V Unix and BSD Unix, was written mostly in Pascal, included its own graphical Display Manager, and built an RPC system called NCS RPC that later influenced CORBA and Microsoft's own RPC technology.
