HarmonyOS 5, also known as HarmonyOS NEXT, is a proprietary distributed operating system developed by Huawei that succeeded the earlier HarmonyOS, with the key difference that the NEXT version supports only native HarmonyOS applications. Unlike the Android based HarmonyOS versions 1 through 4 released from 2019 to 2024, the NEXT version, first launched on the Pura X phone, does not include the Android Open Source Project core and cannot run Android applications. It discards the common Unix like Linux kernel and replaces the earlier multiple kernel system with a bespoke HarmonyOS microkernel called the HongMeng Kernel, and shares lineage with the lightweight LiteOS real time operating system built for resource constrained devices such as smart wearables and IoT products.
