DBOS

DBOS is an open source durable workflow execution library for the Python, TypeScript, Java and Go programming languages, grown out of a research collaboration started in 2020 between MIT, Stanford and Carnegie Mellon after database researcher Michael Stonebraker and Matei Zaharia discussed how to better scale and manage large numbers of Apache Spark tasks. The company DBOS, Inc. was founded in 2023 to commercialize the work, and in March 2024 it released the DBOS Transact library, starting with TypeScript support before adding Python, Java and Go. Its core idea is to treat all operating system state as database tables so that operations become ordinary queries run from stateless tasks, letting an application resume after a failure with no lost data and no repeated work. It offers durable workflows, database transactions, task queueing, messaging and time travel debugging as its main features.
