MachTen is a Unix-like operating system built by Tenon Intersystems on the Mach kernel, 4.4BSD, GNU tools and the X Window System. Rather than booting a Macintosh natively the way Apple's own A/UX did, MachTen ran as an application inside classic Mac OS, sharing the host's Hierarchical File System. The original 68000 version shipped in 1991, and a PowerPC version, Power MachTen, followed in 1995. Tenon discontinued the product in October 2001, naming Mac OS X as its successor.
