Sugar (desktop environment)

Sugar is a free and open source desktop environment built on GTK+ and designed for interactive learning by children. It grew out of the One Laptop per Child project and served as the default interface on OLPC's XO-1 laptop, first released in May 2006, with continued development by Sugar Labs since May 2008. Rather than using the conventional desktop, folder and window metaphor, Sugar runs full screen activities that focus a child's attention on one task at a time, and it keeps an automatic journal that lets a user retrieve past work by date, activity or file type. It is written in Python, which makes it directly modifiable by anyone who can program, and it is distributed as a Live CD, Live USB or installable package across several Linux distributions in 25 languages.
