The GNU General Public License, version 3, was written as an attempt to address concerns raised about version 2 and was officially released by the Free Software Foundation on 29 June 2007. Work on it was announced in late 2005 and a first discussion draft was published on 16 January 2006, when public consultation began. GPLv3 was written by Richard Stallman with legal counsel from Eben Moglen and Richard Fontana of the Software Freedom Law Center. It improved compatibility with several free software licenses, such as the Apache License version 2.0 and the GNU Affero General Public License, which GPLv2 could not be combined with. Like every GPL it is a copyleft license.
