TrueOS, originally launched as PC-BSD, was a Unix-like, server-oriented operating system built on the most recent FreeBSD-CURRENT releases. Kris Moore founded the project as PC-BSD in 2005 to make FreeBSD more accessible to desktop users, and it was renamed TrueOS in September 2016. It aimed at easy installation through graphical tools and ready-made desktop environments, offered official binary Nvidia and Intel drivers for hardware acceleration, and supported running Windows software through Wine. Development of TrueOS ended in 2020, when its developers recommended that users move to other BSD based systems, and the project shifted from being a desktop operating system in its own right to a core system supporting derivative projects such as GhostBSD and Project Trident.
