David Harold Bailey, born on 14 August 1948, is a mathematician and computer scientist who earned a BS in mathematics from Brigham Young University in 1972 and a PhD in mathematics from Stanford University in 1976, worked for 14 years as a computer scientist at NASA Ames Research Center, and from 1998 to 2013 was a Senior Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is best known as a co-author, with Peter Borwein and Simon Plouffe, of a 1997 paper presenting the formula for pi that permits binary or hexadecimal digits of pi to be calculated from an arbitrary position by a simple algorithm. He also researches numerical analysis and parallel computing, has published studies on the fast Fourier transform, high-precision arithmetic and the PSLQ integer relation algorithm, and is a co-author of the NAS Benchmarks used to assess and analyze the performance of parallel scientific computers. In 1993 he received the Sidney Fernbach Award of the IEEE Computer Society, and in 2008 he shared the ACM Gordon Bell Prize.
