Rangaswamy Narasimhan

Rangaswamy Narasimhan (April 17, 1926 to September 3, 2007) was an Indian computer and cognitive scientist regarded by many as the father of computer science research in India. Returning to India in 1959 to join Homi Bhabha's group of scientists at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, he designed TIFRAC, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Automatic Calculator, completed in 1959 and commissioned in February 1960 as one of India's first digital computers. He spent thirty six years at the Tata Institute, was instrumental in founding CMC Limited in 1975 and the Computer Society of India, serving as the society's first president, and received India's Padma Shri award in 1977.
