Seppo Ilmari Linnainmaa, born in 1945 in Pori, Finland, is a Finnish mathematician and computer scientist known for creating the modern version of backpropagation, the reverse mode of automatic differentiation that underlies how neural networks are trained. He earned his degrees at the University of Helsinki and also worked at the University of Maryland and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.
